Peter George Savage 1878 - 1968

55 years' service!

We are indebted to Vince Savage for supplying this information about his great-grandfather, Peter George Savage, and the accompanying photographs.

Peter Savage commenced working for Fielding & Platt on 1st February 1891, officially retiring on 31 January 1941, after completing 50 years’ service, whereupon he was retained for WW2 war effort until 1946.

He is also shown here on the back row of a group photo of F&P employees, c.1915.

Whilst not a lot is known about his activities throughout his working life, it is probable that he was latterly office-based. He was a witness to a U.S. Patent, dated 1908, by John Fielding, for an Improvement in Suction Gas-Generators. (shown here).

He was supplied with a medal by F&P in 1915 (shown here) indicating that he was ‘on war service’, presumably a reserved occupation.

The Company also presented him with a Rolex Pocket Watch.  The inscription reads ‘Presented to PG Savage by Messrs Fielding & Platt Ltd on completion of 50 years’ service. 1891 – 1941. (shown here).

Vince proudly retains this valuable heirloom, still in working order!

Finally, there is a tribute to Peter Savage and a W A Thomas (who retired two months later than Peter having also completed 55 years’ service), by G J Collingbourne, in the February 1946 edition of the Fielding Press Newsletter that was an in-house magazine of the time. The tribute mentions Peter’s, or was it George’s, sporting prowess playing cricket and rugby for the Gordon Wanderers and occasionally for Gloucester 1st’s and also athletics.
