FRANCIS JOHN PLATT

 

2nd son of James & Elizabeth Platt

 

Francis was born in 1869

 

 

He married Lily Emma Aldridge of Sunny croft, Tuffley, she was the

Daughter of George Aldridge.

They married on the 11th October 1892 at the Southgate Congregational Church, Gloucester.

 

They had 4 Children

 

Marjorie Lily Platt 29th August 1897

Winifred Frances Platt 24th December 1906

Ronald James Platt 1909

Kathleen Laura Platt 20th July 1910

 

1881 Census states he was at Boarding School

1891 Census states he is employed as a Mechanical draughtsman.

 

In 1901 Francis is now a Mechanical Engineer, as well as a Managing Director of Fielding & Platt where he stayed for 2 years.

In 1905 he became Managing director of The Dudbridge Iron Works, & in 1906 they were living at The Kestrels in Stroud, Gloucester.

 

By the 1911 Census they were back living in Gloucester at Tudor Lodge in Stroud Road and his occupation is given as a Mechanical Engineer.

 

He also played Football for GFC, where he was a full back, playing along side his Brother, Edward, but he only played a few games.

He was also a keen Cyclist, belonging to Gloucester Cycling Club.

 

He died on 1st December 1924 (last Quarter) age 55 years in Hampstead, London.

 

His wife Lily died on 12th May 1938 at Sevendale, Spa road, Gloucester and is interred with Francis, his parents and Francis’ Brother Frederick in Tredworth cemetery.

 

Her Daughter, Marjorie, her brother, George M Aldridge & her brother in law Francis Hawkins Bretherton were executors of her will.

Everything was left in trust till her youngest child was 21, when everything then passed to all her children.

 

Her brother in law was of Messer’s Bretherton & sons Solicitors.

  • Kathleen Laura Platt was born on 20th July 1910.

    Francis Platt travelled extensively on business through occupied France in 1915. His firm built over 800 aero engines under licence from M. Salmson of Paris, which were installed principally in the Henry Farman F27 biplane used during WW1.

  • I am one of Winifred Frances (not Francis) May (nee Platt)’s granddaughters. Her date of birth was 24th (not 14th) December 1906.
