New Life for Old Presses
I have never worked at Fielding and Platt but as a water hydraulics engineer I come across their presses quite often. They are generally in remarkably good condition for their age and, if one casts one’s mind back to when they were built, many of them must have seemed pretty innovative at the time.
I am hoping for an opportunity to view the 3000 ton forging/extrusion press at Hindustan Aerospace in Bangalore, India, over the next few days, with a view to upgrading the hydraulics (proportional control, etc.). As someone else on this site has said, the security is pretty tight, but if I get through the screen I will report back to this site with some comments.
It really is a pleasure to see these old ladies get up and dance again after being fitted with state of the art controls!

Bob Harding supervised the installation of this press at the Hindustan Aeronautics plant.
Hi Jim! Good to know that information. Many years later, when I was in Sales I went to India for a 4 week tour around some of our customers and visited HAL and viewed the installation. I recall that security was extremely tight, as were visits to their Ordnance Factories, nevertheless, I managed to see the press and installation. In 1998 Fielding’s supplied a new complete Auxiliary Cylinder Assembly for that press. John B
