This order was for the supply of two machines. One for Morriston, the other for Stepney.

Chippy! More useful memories and introducing new names at the same time. I feel sure we will come across their photos later! I seem to recall that from time to time we received consignments of scrap cans for crushing from Hayes Metals in Hempsted Lane. Hopefully, someone out there may be able to confirm this. John B
Ollie senior was in charge of Hydraulic 2 when I arrived there in 1967 to finish my apprenticeship as a fitter, but I’m sure he then moved down to Hydraulic 1. From what I can remember he was a good foreman and liked by the people that he was in charge of. Then Pete Sutton took over as foreman with Lionel Mcreesh as charge hand, hope I’ve spelt his name right? I think ‘young’ Ollie worked in Hydraulic 1, so I probably didn’t get to work with him, unless I did when I was doing my ‘tour’ around the works spending time in the various departments, but I really can’t remember now. Any differences between ‘old’ and ‘young’ Ollies I can’t recall now. Well, that is apart from the obvious! As for the scrap that was used for testing, I think it may have come from ‘Raggy Smalls’ yard around the corner in Merchants Road? We may have used a few bits and pieces from the works, but there probably wasn’t the variety of scrap that would be found in a usual scrap yard. Chippy Aston
Thanks Chippy – do you remember working with Ollie Vallender (senior or junior!)? If so, would be good to hear what they were like (and how they were similar or different).
Also, out of interest, do you know where Fielding’s got the scrap to test these balers with? Was it from scrap produced at the Works itself or from elsewhere?
This photo, taken in Hydraulic Fitting Shop 2, shows Ollie Vallender “senior” testing the baler. I say Ollie senior because his son “young” Ollie worked at F&P too. Not much else I can add to that. Chippy Aston
