I can’t remember Stan being in the fitting shops when I was there, but he could well have been in my early days in the shops. Maybe someone else could help us out with that one. Stan was another one of those who would call round to the spares bench for a chat, much laughter ensuing, you get the picture! When I played skittles with him he had a saying of, AGONY KID, IT’S AGONY! He would shout that out if he got a very low score with his three goes with the balls, and if he got a beaver (0), well, more AGONY KID, IT’S AGONY!! Our ‘home’ alley was in the Fieldings Sports Club at the time, so Stan wouldn’t have far to come as he lived in Hempsted then, so he probably rode his push bike down! I also remember if you saw him riding down Southgate Street and you called out to him he would call back, WHEY HEY KID, feet off the peddles! Great guy! Chippy Aston
Chippy! Once again, your memory for detail is exceptional. I am sure you are right in identifying Stan as the fitter in the photo, it certainly looks like him! It is unlikely that he was still in the fitting shop during your time there. I recall that he was in the Estimating Department; his primary role in providing cost estimates for spare parts to enable the Sales Department to submit quotations to customers. John B
Thanks Chippy! Was Stan a Fitter before his days in the offices? Any memories of Stan being “quite a character” and tales of skittles nights you’d like to share would, of course, be welcome!
The guy with the formed pan in his hand is (I think) Stan Wood. The other person I do not recognise. When I was at F&P, Stan had gone over to the offices, doing what I’m afraid I can’t remember. Stan used to play in a skittles team that I once belonged to and he was quite a character, always seemed a happy kind of person. I think he lived in Hempsted. Chippy Aston
