  • Cheers Jim and thanks for adding this comment – your memory of Jim’s saying is brilliant – do feel free to share any more memories you have of him or anything else. I take it Jim put you through your paces when it came to tackling practice then…?!

  • Tony Tanner was the scrum half for the team. I remember one of Jim Haines’ favorite sayings was: “no matter how big they are, they can’t go without their legs”.

  • Thanks Alan – only a couple more names to remember now! Tony looks like he was a quick lad – was he one of your wingers?

  • The player on the right hand side of the middle row was Tony Tanner.

  • Ollie, Jim Haines was the back bone of Atlas rugby team as a player, manager, and coach. Jim was the guy that kept the club alive, he was Mister Rugby to us.

As regards the scrum cap not sure where it came from and did not wear it very often.

  • Thanks Alan – I’m glad you found this page – I was going to draw your attention to it because I thought it might be you in the middle of the back row in the scrum cap…?! Is it?! Wearing a scrum cap in those days must’ve been quite modern – I wonder why you did? I wonder what memories you have of the squad that year? and also what Jim Haines was like as a coach?! No one’s talked about him in this capacity yet.
