  • “I was at Fielding and Platt from Sept 1974.

My training at Fieldings was the best anyone could have asked for and has helped me all through my working life.”

  • Hi Guy!  Many thanks for adding the names and also where you are at present. Hopefully, we will soon have the completed set for this year!

P.S. If you, or any others, know of any former colleagues who were apprentices in the ’70s, please do mention that the site would like to obtain copies of the apprentice intakes for the years that are currently missing.   John B

  • Hi John!  The missing names are Trevor Baldwin (back row far left), Mike Allen (back row 5th from left), Alan Clifford (back row 2nd from right), Steve French (back row far right), Brian Hale (middle row 4th from left). I am back row 4th from left, Guy Jones.

Some of the apprentices were more commonly known by their nicknames Trevor Baldwin (Split pin), Anthony Hill (Pink), Ian Hill (Goblin), Chris Yates (Jess), Ivan Adams (Odd sock). I left Fieldings shortly after finishing my apprenticeship, to join the police force. Today I work at Messier Dowty in the design office and it’s only now, when I look back, that I realise what a great time we had and what a brilliant place it was to work.

  • Hi Les!  Many thanks to you and to all others for contributing the additional names. We are gradually getting there! The question now is, where are they all now and do they still keep in touch with one another?  John B

  • Hi Andrew!   Many thanks for the additional names that are now added to the page. Most helpful. I have emailed you separately regarding your other points.   John B

  • John!  I can’t put a face to your name, I know it, but it was 40 years ago! I don’t have a photo of my year apprentices, but I do have a couple of photos in heavy m/c shop. I don’t know yet how to let you have them. I have not got the hang of e-mail & computers! There is much I could write about. Alan is next to Marcus, also on there is Stuart Moon, back row 8th , Roger Smart, 8th middle, Graham Poole 1st, Dave Smith 2nd middle, Guy Jones, 4th back. I will e-mail the names of 1973 to you if you wish.   Bye.

  • I was an apprentice the year before this. I know back row 2 is Les Hamblin. It is Alan Barnley next to trainers Chris Cruse & Marcus Jelfs. I can tell you all the names of my year, 1973, if you like?

    By andrew rickards (18/01/2014)
  • Andrew!   Many thanks for your contribution. We will get there eventually. Kindly clarify if Alan is next to Chris, or Marcus? As you will see, the site does not have a photo for 1973. Do you have one that we may copy and post to the site, whereupon you could supply us the names? That would be brilliant!   John B

  • Hi John!   Have had another look at the photo and I think the young man sitting on the ground next to Nigel could be Ivan Adams? Also, I’ve found that when I click to enlarge the picture it rotates and that makes it rather uncomfortable to view! Is there something that can be done at your end John or do I need to try and sort it out here?   Chippy Aston

The photo does not rotate when I try it at this end!   John B

  • Hi John!  So far I’ve been able to put 3 names to the faces on this photo, and possibly 1 first name. Back row standing, Jim Harris 3rd from left, next to him Guy Jones(?) and 6th from left Graham… (?). I recognise some of the other faces, but at the moment I can’t put names to them. The instructor on the left is Chris Cruse, can’t help with the other one, even though his face looks familiar. Come on all you ex Fieldings guys, lets put some names to these ‘young’ men! If I rightly remember, Jim Harris, came with me and Alan Meredith, on his first away job, to I think Ashley Aluminium in, Northwich Cheshire? Chippy Aston

  • Hi Chippy! Many thanks for your usual prompt response. I will await a few more responses and confirmations from others before I fill in some of the names, but thanks for kicking it off! John B
